Courtesy Buses: Stay Safe, Get Accredited

Feb 13, 2023 | Hub

In Victoria most bus services require the operator to be accredited with Transport Safety Victoria. This includes:

  • a community and private bus service in connection with the activities of a religious, educational, health, welfare, philanthropic, sporting or social body using a bus (with 24 or more seating positions).

If a club wanted to hire a courtesy bus or minivan for their members, they would need to get accredited. This requirement ensures that all buses operating in the state meet safety standards, have proper insurance coverage and are properly maintained.

Becoming accredited requires:

  • completion of an application form
  • providing evidence of:
    • insurance coverage
    • bus maintenance program, and
    • driver training procedures
  • undergoing regular inspections to ensure they meet the required standards.

The accreditation process is designed to protect the safety of passengers and other road users, and to provide peace of mind for those using the service. Accreditation also helps to promote a level playing field for all bus operators in the state.

In addition to accreditation, clubs must also adhere to a set of operational requirements. This includes:

  • ensuring that all drivers:
    • have a valid driver’s license, and
    • are trained in safe driving practices
  • ensuring that all buses are regularly serviced and maintained to a high standard.

It’s important for clubs to understand their responsibilities and take the necessary steps to become accredited. By doing so, they can ensure the safety of their passengers, comply with the law and provide a reliable and safe service to the community.
